Jennifer Parker Aikey (eye-key) is a PhD Candidate in Music Education at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she also holds a graduate assistantship. She is an Instructor of Strings at Winston-Salem State University.
Aikey is the graduate program coordinator for the Peer Artist Leadership (PAL) program at UNCG. Through her graduate assistantship at UNCG, she is the co-teacher for the Lillian Rauch Beginning Strings Program (LRBS) at Peck K-8 Expeditionary School in Greensboro. Both PAL and LRBS provide private (PAL) or group (LRBS) instruction for K-12 students in the Greensboro community. Prior to her arrival in Greensboro, Aikey taught Orchestra at Durham Middle School from 2013-2023 in Cobb County, GA. While at Durham, she also taught guitar and was a co-director of the musical theater program. Aikey's orchestras received consistent superior ratings at LGPE (Large Group Performance Evaluation). She also piloted an elementary strings program at East Aiken Elementary School of the Arts in Aiken, SC. Aikey received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Augusta University and received her Master of Music Education from Florida State University. Her passion for music began through the opportunities offered to her in Georgia public schools, which continues to drive her commitment to providing high-quality music instruction for underserved students. Aikey's primary research area is examining experiences of neurodivergent music teachers and preservice teachers. She has also researched factors influencing music teacher attrition/retention and equity and access in music education. While she specializes in qualitative inquiry, she has also conducted quantitative and community-engaged research. Aikey's scholastic composition, "Echoes of Hope," was recently premiered by the Sinfonia Orchestra at UNCG. She is also an active member of NAfME and ASTA, and serves in the Accessible Music Education SRIG and on the ASTA Advocacy committee. She is an active clinician, conductor, and performer on violin, mandolin, guitar, and voice. |
